When exactly is the DPP deadline for footwear?
Footwear is expected to move alongside the EU’s textiles product group under ESPR, but a footwear-specific delegated act with a confirmed date hasn’t been finalised at the time of writing. Rather than commit to a single year, we’d recommend checking the European Commission’s current ESPR working plan for the latest status before treating any deadline as fixed — and building the passport now so you’re ready regardless of the exact date.
How is a Footwear DPP different from Apparel or Fashion?
Footwear is built from more distinct components than most garments — upper, lining, midsole, outsole — each potentially a different material with its own sourcing and safety profile. The footwear passport structure reflects that with a component-by-component bill of materials, plus chromium VI and other leather/rubber-specific safety fields that don’t apply to apparel.
What is chromium VI, and why does it matter for footwear?
Chromium VI is a regulated substance that can form during certain leather tanning processes and is restricted under REACH for items in contact with skin, including footwear. If your leather supplier already tests for it, that result carries directly into the passport’s Safety & Substances category — no extra testing required, just visibility.
How does the authenticity check help with counterfeiting?
Each pair’s passport is tied to a unique record in your Shopify catalogue. When a buyer or resale platform scans the code, they can confirm the record was genuinely issued by your brand — which is especially relevant in footwear categories, like trainers, where counterfeiting and resale are common. It’s a first check, not a replacement for physical anti-counterfeit measures.
Does this apply to online sellers on Shopify?
Yes. ESPR applies to any economic operator placing products on the EU market, including e-commerce and Shopify sellers. If you ship shoes, trainers, or sandals to EU customers through your store, you’ll need a valid passport for each product once the relevant delegated act applies, regardless of channel.
