A Digital Product Passport (DPP) for tyres is a machine-readable data record scanned from the tyre itself. It’s built on the same rolling resistance, wet grip, and noise data behind the EU tyre label you already produce — then extended with the material, recycled-content, and safety data the label doesn’t cover.

Who must create the tyre DPP?
Under ESPR, the “economic operator” placing the tyre on the EU market carries full DPP responsibility — and the retreading market brings in one more role.

The company producing the tyre bears primary responsibility for accurate label, material, and safety data.

Companies bringing tyres into the EU from outside must confirm valid label registration and a passport before sale.

Businesses that retread a casing update the passport with new tread data while preserving the casing's material history.

Non-EU brands can appoint an EU-based representative to carry DPP obligations on their behalf.

Frequently asked questions
When do tyres actually need a Digital Product Passport?
Tyres are a first-cohort product category under ESPR (Regulation 2024/1781). The European Commission is expected to adopt the tyre-specific delegated act between 2026 and 2028, with a transition period before compliance becomes mandatory — current estimates point to around mid-2028, though the exact date is set by the delegated act itself. We’d recommend checking the current status before treating any single date as fixed.
Is a DPP different from the EU tyre label I already use?
Yes. EU Tyre Labelling Regulation (EU) 2020/740 already mandates the fuel efficiency, wet grip, and noise label most passenger and commercial tyres carry. The DPP is separate but complementary — it carries the same graded label data into a fuller record with material composition, recycled content, and chemical safety the label alone doesn’t show. The two frameworks are expected to coexist.
Does the DPP requirement cover retreaded tyres?
The scope is still being finalised, but retreaded tyres are expected to be covered, at least partially. Retreading fits ESPR’s circular economy goals, so the delegated act is expected to include fields for casing reuse and retreading cycle count — PassoNext’s tyre template already includes them so you’re ready either way.
Are agricultural or off-road tyres in scope?
Agricultural and off-road tyres are generally expected to sit outside the initial ESPR tyre delegated act, which is expected to focus on passenger car and light truck tyres, possibly extending to commercial vehicle tyres. Agricultural and construction tyres may be addressed in a later delegated act cycle — worth monitoring if that’s your category.
Does this apply to online sellers on Shopify?
Yes. ESPR applies to any economic operator placing products on the EU market, including e-commerce and Shopify sellers. If you ship tyres to EU customers or trade buyers through your store, you’ll need a valid passport for each product once the relevant delegated act applies, regardless of channel.
